House hazard a headache for Greenwood Park resident

The area's ward councillor had to intervene, asking to the City to urgently take heed of the matter.

A GREENWOOD Park resident said he is in limbo over his and his family’s future after his house was severely damaged by a burst municipal pipe in March last year.

The burst pipe on Hedley Road wreaked havoc on Mark Thompson’s house, leading to his driveway, perimeter fence, retaining wall and walkway to the house being severely damaged by the sheer force of water.

Now, almost a year later, Thompson said there has been no action taken to reinstate the damaged roadway outside his property or repair the damage to his house.

Thompson added he also fears over the structural integrity of his house as large cracks in support walls have widened.

“This has all taken an adverse toll on my health because of the stress. Currently I don’t know what the future holds or where I stand currently. At the last interaction with the municipality I was asked to get three quotes, at my expense, however, what the scope of work is is unclear. I also have to get an engineer in to see what is going on.

“This house has stood here for more than five decades but my fear is I could potentially be left without a roof over my head if the house is deemed unfit to live in. I’ve already had to reinstate the entrance to my driveway by myself in order to get a vehicle in and out of the property,” he said.

Thompson added that the ward councillor had intervened, asking to the City to urgently intervene.

Meanwhile Ward 34 councillor Andrew Akkers said recent heavy rains have adversely affected the roadway outside Thompson’s home.

“The debris, loose stone and sand in the hole where the burst occurred is now flowing into the stormwater drain, causing another problem. Hedley Road leading into Scotia Terrace is a knock-on effect of this issue. I have emailed the municipality to help intervene but thus far no action has been taken. The cracks and gaps in the walls inside Mr Thompson’s home have gotten bigger and bigger and this requires urgent attention,” he said.

At the time of publishing, the eThekwini Municipality did not comment.

Ward 34 councillor Andrew Akkers said the backfill material in the damaged section where the burst occurred are now washing downhill into a stormwater drain, causing further blockages.
