Search still on for man swept out to sea near uMhlanga

The man’s body has not yet been recovered despite extensive search efforts by the KZN Surf Rescue Network.

DURBAN North Police have opened a case of a missing person after a 23-year-old man was swept out to sea near uMhlanga on Monday afternoon.

The man, believed to be from Limpopo, was swept out at Eastmoor Crescent Beach.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson Craig Lambinon confirmed that the KZN Surf Rescue Network was activated following eyewitness reports of a drowning in progress.

“eThekwini Municipal uMhlanga Surf lifeguards, NSRI uMhlanga rescue swimmers, Netcare 911 ambulance services, Marshall Security, the SA Police Services, Metro Police Search and Rescue and Police Search and Rescue responded. NSRI Durban dispatched the NSRI rescue craft, JetRib Rescue 5 Charlie.

“On arrival at the scene, NSRI rescue swimmers and eThekwini uMhlanga lifeguards launched into the surf using a Malibu rescue board and rescue torpedo buoys and free-dive searched for a 23-year-old male from Limpopo who had gone missing in the surf after being caught in rip currents while swimming. Despite an extensive sea and shoreline search, there remain no signs of the missing man,” he said.

The spokesperson for the Durban North SAPS, Nonhlanhla Shozi, confirmed that a case of a missing person has been opened.
