Two sentenced to life in prison for Effingham murder

The men, aged 45 and 41, were convicted of the killing of a taxi boss in Effingham in 2022.

TWO men have been sentenced to life in prison after they were found guilty of the murder of taxi owner Siyabonga Ngcobo, which occurred in Effingham on July 10, 2022.

Mfanafuthi Madlala (41) and Sifiso Sokhulu (45) were sentenced at the Durban Regional Court on Tuesday (November 26) for the murder.

It is unclear why the duo opened fire on Ngcobo, who was driving his minibus taxi along Ramchand Road when the incident took place.

“He was shot while driving, and his vehicle overturned into a yard. When police arrived at the scene, Ngcobo was found inside his Quantum with gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene,” explained SAPS provincial spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

“The Provincial Taxi Violence detectives took over the investigations, arresting the first suspect on the same day when they recovered a licensed firearm. A day later, a second suspect was also cornered and arrested. The investigating officers collected strong evidence that connected the suspects with the murder and managed to convince the court to deny them bail until the day of their sentencing,” he said.

Netshiunda added that both suspects were also declared unfit to possess firearms.
