This comes after the province experienced various challenges in recent weeks as a result of flooding.

“A number of communities have been seriously affected, and some lost family members. Schools have been no exception in this regard,” read the statement.

According to the weather services, the province is likely to experience heavy rainfall this afternoon, (January 17) which is the learners’ first day of school.

The department has directed schools to release learners and their staff by 13:00.
