Suspected liquor thieves arrested after uMhlanga pursuit
During the pursuit the suspects collided with and damaged several vehicles, forcing them to stop on Umhlanga Rocks Drive.
THREE suspects believed to be linked to liquor store theft cases across eThekwini were arrested after a chase through uMhlanga village on Tuesday afternoon (October 13).
The Durban North SAPS Crime Prevention team and Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team (SOT), who were conducting patrols, spotted the suspects fleeing a shopping centre with packets of alcohol, with members of the public giving chase.
Two of the suspects jumped in an awaiting getaway vehicle, a green Hyundai i10.
“Our members immediately moved to intercept the vehicle. However, the suspects fled, driving through a red traffic light at the intersection of Lagoon Drive and Chartwell Drive before continuing towards Umhlanga Rocks Drive,” explained Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell.
The suspects were forced to stop at another traffic light due to heavy traffic, allowing law enforcement to catch up to them.
“As members exited their vehicles and approached, the suspects attempted to flee once again, driving into surrounding vehicles in an effort to force their way through the traffic. During the attempted escape, the suspects collided with and damaged several vehicles before their vehicle eventually came to a stop and they were arrested,” he said.
Durban North SAPS members then searched the vehicles and recovered the bags of expensive liquor.
“Further investigation established that the suspects had allegedly stolen the liquor from a store at the shopping centre after being confronted by the store manager,” Powell said.
The men are believed to be linked to several other liquor store theft cases, including incidents reported in Greenwood Park, Hillcrest and Amanzimtoti.
