Virginia Prep learner lives out his dream at Sharks rugby game

Jake Bergover had the opportunity to lead the team he supports out onto the field as well as meet some of his rugby idols.

IT was a special moment for Glen Hills youngster and rugby fan, Jake Bergover, as he led the Hollywoodbets Sharks out into their match against the DHL Stormers in their Vodacom United Rugby Championship match at Kings Park on Saturday.

His dad entered a competition held by Vodacom to lead the team out and was chosen from more than 2 000 entries.

His mother, Taryn Bergover, said that Jake was even named after former World Cup-winning coach0 Jake White, and his second name is Patrick like the former Sharks player, Patrick Lambie.

Jake, who is a Grade Four learner at Virginia Preparatory, described the experience as a dream come true as he ran out with captain Lukhanyo Am at his side.

“It was such an amazing experience. I had the honour of leading the team out and putting the match ball down on the field. You don’t realise how loud it is until you’re in front of the crowd. It was a bit nerve-racking because there were so many people in the stands. I absolutely loved the whole experience, running out with the team and meeting a few of my idols. My favourite player, Curwin Bosch, also signed my rugby ball. I also got to watch the game with my mom and dad and my siblings which made it even more special,” he said.

His mother explained the emotions of seeing her son lead the home team out.

“When the song, Bayete Inkosi, played and Jake ran out onto the field, I just welled up with emotion. It just makes you so proud of your city, province and team. To be able to experience this with my family and to have Jake was incredible,” she said.
