Baby home project supports expectant moms

Each care pack is worth R500 and the idea is to target government hospitals.

AS part of a project to help pregnant mothers in need a Glen Anil resident has begun a care pack drive set to target government hospitals.

It is all part of a project run by BabyLine, a counselling and support service for pregnant moms struggling to care for their babies.

Expectant mothers can reach out via phone, WhatsApp, or social media, explained Tatum Teunissen, the national co-ordinator for BabyLine.

The service is part of the non-profit-organisation, The Peace Agency, as well as The Baby Home Durban North, which cares for orphaned and abandoned babies.

Each care pack, worth R500, is full of items for both the newborn baby and the mother, with the first donation destined for mothers at Addington Hospital.

“When I took over this month as national co-ordinator for BabyLine, this was one of the first projects I initiated. We have 50 care packs which we will deliver at the maternity ward at Addington Hospital. Each pack contains nappies, wet wipes, three baby outfits, a blanket, a night gown as well as items for the mother, including toiletries, maternity pads and a face cloth.

“With BabyLine the idea was to help pregnant mothers and counsel them before they reach the point where they feel like they can’t do anything and abandon their child. Through that we are running the campaign where we will be going into government hospitals to hand out packs. The plan is to do one at least every month, dependent on donations from residents, businesses and corporates,” she said.

Her mother, Jo, who runs the Baby Home, said she hoped the project would offer greater support for vulnerable mothers.

“The reality is some mothers feel like they can’t keep the child because they haven’t got basic necessities to tide them over until they get back home. So often mothers feel alone and lost and we hope these care packs will help them get started and show that they aren’t alone. BabyLine has been an invaluable resource since it was started and the hope is for this project to grow and flourish,” she said.

Businesses and residents can sponsor a pack by contacting Jo of The Baby Home Durban North on 082 773 0781 or email info@babyhome.org.za.
