Anger over municipal officials’ no-show at public meeting on Herrwood Drive

According to the Ward councillor the meeting was called to address community concerns about the upgrade process and alleged lack of due procedure.

RESIDENTS of Herrwood Drive have again expressed their concerns at a public meeting about the eThekwini Municipality’s possible plans to widen and upgrade the road.

This was the second public meeting on the proposed plans, held at the NG Kerk on Monday evening (July 21).

According to Ward 35 councillor Bradley Singh, officials from the eThekwini Municipality’s Town Planning Department were a no-show, leading to anger among residents.

When Singh last spoke to Northglen News, he said there was a plan to install new traffic circles with the possibility of adding a set of traffic lights at the traffic circle at the intersection of Centenary Boulevard (leading to Gateway) and Umhlanga Rocks Drive.

“I called this meeting to address significant community concerns about the upgrade process and alleged lack of due procedure. The community of Herrwood Drive is extremely concerned that due process was not followed in the planning and execution of these upgrades.

“This was also a chance to provide the Town Planning Department an opportunity to demonstrate that all municipal procedures were adhered to. Their unfortunate absence made it extremely difficult to find a constructive solution and has only deepened the community’s distrust.”

Singh added he would be writing to the City Manager about the matter.

“These officials must be held accountable for their actions and for their disregard of public participation. They will come and account to the public and apologise for not attending this meeting in order to move forward.”

There has been no response from the eThekwini Municipality on what the plans to upgrade Herrwood Drive entail.
