Durban North longboard surfer wins LaMuse Classic
In what was Christy Gilmour’s third appearance at the competition, the 25-year-old also placed third in the open women’s division.
THE eighth annual LaMuse Classic longboard surfing competition held in Muizenberg recently was one to remember for Durban North resident Christy Gilmour.
The longboard surfing contest is one of its kind in the country as it is run by women, for women.
In what was Gilmour’s third appearance at the competition, the 25-year-old also placed third in the open women’s division.
While it was a stellar result for the national longboard champ, it was all about the sisterhood uniting through the sport.

“I was incredibly lucky to compete again at LaMuse. The competition is really about expressing and celebrating the strength women through a common bond. Being a woman in general in the sport is massive as surfing and longboard surfing have always been considered a man’s world, so this competition allows women to take the lead which is a huge stand for us. What has been incredible to see is how the competition has grown over the years, especially in the different divisions, including the Mothers and Daughters division,” she said.
Gilmour was one of several volunteers who helped the Roxy Davis Foundation with a surf therapy clinic.
“This was also such a special moment being involved with the Roxy Davis Foundation. It was heartwarming being able to help the adaptive community catch their first wave and for some, the first time being in the ocean. I got to push some of them on their first waves. Being a part of that was incredible in what the foundation calls surf therapy,” she said.
