VIDEO: Helpline expands its reach thanks to community support

Outside of being a counselling and support service, the project has expanded in recent months to include delivering care packs to government hospitals in Durban, and recently Johannesburg.

SINCE its launch the BabyLine helpline has offered a lifeline to mothers in need.

Outside of being a counselling and support service for pregnant moms struggling to care for their babies, the project has expanded in recent months to include delivering care packs to government hospitals in Durban, and recently Johannesburg.

The service is part of the NPO The Peace Agency, as well as The Baby Home Durban North, which cares for orphaned and abandoned babies.

Funds recently raised through the Mandela Day initiative will also go a long way to helping the counselling service in its mission to help those in need, explained Tatum Teunissen, the national co-ordinator for BabyLine.

“It has been an incredible few months for us as we’ve now reached out to several Johannesburg public hospitals with our care pack drive. Over Mandela Day, Fine Line Tattoo and Piercing, the Wild Orchid Tattoo Studio and the Round Table of Durban No 2, collectively raised a total of R40 400. Fine Line actually raised R17 600 and the Round Table matched their contribution,” explained Teunissen.

“Because of this and support from the community we’ve been able to distribute around 850 packs to government hospitals so far this year. Each care pack, worth R500, is full of items for both the newborn baby and the mother. We will also be spreading the word on BabyLine and what we do. Through the work we do we also connect mothers with local organisations, community members, and support networks that can provide long-term care and resources if they are outside KZN,” she said.

Expectant mothers can reach out via phone or WhatsApp on the 24-hour line 082 069 9067.
