Suspects open fire on security officer in Somerset Park

One of the suspects involved was wearing a balaclava and a bulletproof vest.

DURBAN North police are searching for a gang of armed suspects involved in a shoot-out with a security officer from Blue Security on Tuesday morning.

While the officer escaped unscathed in the shoot-out on Somerset Drive, a case of attempted murder will be opened at the station.

The incident occurred at about 10:15, confirmed Durban North SAPS spokesperson Nonhlanhla Shozi.

In a statement on Blue Security’s Facebook page, the suspects used two vehicles in the incident.

“Our officers were attending to an alarm activation in Midsomer Drive when they observed a suspicious individual loitering outside a property. When they approached, the suspect fled in a white Toyota Starlet. Our officers pursued the vehicle and managed to intercept it in Somerset Drive.

“Upon interception, the suspects exited the vehicle and opened fire on the Blue Security team. Moments later, a second vehicle, a Toyota double cab, arrived at the scene. One of its occupants, dressed in a balaclava and wearing a bulletproof vest, discharged rounds from a rifle towards our personnel. Both vehicles fled the area following the exchange,” the statement read.

“We are deeply grateful for the courage, professionalism, and commitment displayed by our team under extremely dangerous circumstances,” said CEO Henk van Bemmelen

He added their team had deployed additional patrols and support to Somerset Park, uMhlanga and surrounding areas.
