SPAR hockey challenge recognised at awards

The tournament was established to create a platform that would showcase young women’s hockey talent and widen participation by including schools from underserved areas.

THE SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge was named ‘Best Girls’ Tournament of the Year’ at the recent SuperSport Schools hockey awards evening.

This year, the tournament celebrated its 15th year.

It was established by Schoolgirls’ Sport with sponsorship from SPAR KZN to create a competitive yet celebratory platform that would not only showcase young women’s hockey talent but also widen participation by including schools from underserved areas.

SPAR has been involved in the Challenge’s journey from the beginning, championing women’s sport and investing in these opportunities for young athletes and officials to develop.

Les Galloway, chairperson of Schoolgirls’ Sport, was thrilled by the recognition.

“This recognition is a tribute not only to the schools, players, umpires and officials, but also to the incredible support from the title sponsor, SPAR.”

Her comments were echoed by Damon Harry, divisional managing director at SPAR KZN.

“The Challenge represents opportunity, empowerment, and inclusivity, and we are proud to partner with the Schoolgirls’ Sport team in creating something that not only develops players and officials, but also inspires future generations of women in sport.”
