Tempers flare at community crime imbizo in uMhlanga

THE crime imbizo in uMhlanga got off to a fiery start last week when one resident voiced his disgust at the Durban North police station for failing to arrive at his house to take fingerprints after it was burgled.
The resident said he had R700 000 worth of jewellery and valuables taken from his home by a person pretending to purchase his home.
Despite the best efforts of Lieutenant Colonel Pam Nair, the Visible Policing (Vispol) Commander of Durban North SAPS, the resident walked out saying a month had gone by and he was not contacted by police for fingerprints.

Various roleplayers, including the Durban North CPF, Ward 35 councillor Bradley Singh, Metro Police, members of the uMhlanga Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association (URRA), as well as station commander for the Durban North police Station, Colonel Jericho Nkomo, were in attendance.
The station previously hosted several community meetings, however, in recent times, the turnouts were low because of meetings held during the day, which prompted the station to move this meeting to the evening at the NG Kerk on Herrwood Drive.
Other key concerns raised at the meeting were the lawlessness, reckless driving, and alleged drug dealing in the uMhlanga village area, and the operating hours of the SAPS satellite station.
Other suggestions raised by residents at the event included involving businesses in the area to work with police.
Another resident suggested that businesses be fined or held accountable for any lawlessness involving their patrons.
