North Durban Lions club stalwart has a heart for community

For the past 60 years Philip Meyer has dedicated his life to serving others in the North Durban community.

AT 84-years-old there is no stopping North Durban Lions Club member Philip Meyer from doing his part to help the community.

For the past 60 years he has dedicated his life to serving others in whatever way he can and has touched communities across two countries, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Having served as a Lions member in Gwelo (now Gweru), Zimbabwe in 1974, he later joined the Pietermaritzburg Lions Club in the late 1980s before eventually joining the North Durban Lions Club in 2007.

“I’ve always enjoyed giving back. My family were my inspiration as a youngster as they would help others in need wherever they could. That certainly rubbed off onto me and I was lucky to have found the Lions Club in the 70s,” he explained.

For residents visiting the Eastman’s SuperSpar, Umhlanga Rocks SuperSpar and Kensington Square SuperSpar, Meyer has been a constant where he has dedicated the past decade to collecting groceries for the Lions’ food collection and hamper projects.

Every month, the club prepares more than 50 food hampers which are then delivered to SASSA pensioners.

“We’ve received such wonderful support from the community in years gone by. I’ve used my time at the collection points to speak to the people about what the Lions are all about, in that way spreading awareness. Having witnessed how the club impacts the lives of those in need really puts things in perspective and it’s what makes doing the collections so important,” he said.
