Debutant Phiri inspires Dolphins to opening win

The Dolphins beat the Tuskers by 14 runs at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium.

THE Hollywoodbets Dolphins got their CSA T20 Challenge campaign off to a winning start on Saturday with a win over Moothee Ram Tuskers.

The Dolphins beat the Tuskers by 14 runs at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium.

The Tuskers team, based in Pietermaritzburg, won the toss and elected to bowl first.

It was a decision that paid dividends as the Dolphins top order were 107/5 in the 13th over.

However an unbeaten 64 off 32 balls from Dolphins debutant Gomolemo Phiri helped steer the home side to 178/5 in their 20 overs.

Phiri’s knock was a masterclass in hitting as the youngster hit five sixes and four fours in a crucial knock.

The Dolphins bagged their first wicket when new signing Anrich Nortje knocked over Cameron Shekleton for seven in the second over of the innings.

Nortje then bowled Kagiso Rapulana early on, leaving the Tuskers 18 for two after four overs.

Sean Gilson was the standout for Tuskers and scored 55 off 33 deliveries but it was not enough as the Dolphins kept taking wickets at regular intervals.

Ultimately the Tuskers finished on 164 for seven, 14 runs short of the target.
