Three suspects linked to Durban North thefts arrested

Law enforcement also recovered several car break-in implements, a remote jammer, and a laptop in Durban North.

THREE suspects, allegedly linked to several theft-out-of-motor-vehicle cases, were arrested on Wednesday (November 26) after a high-speed chase ended on Adelaide Tambo Drive.

A search of their vehicle also uncovered car break-in implements, a remote jammer, a laptop bag containing a laptop that had been stolen that afternoon, and various other items they could not account for.

The suspects’ vehicle, a black Hyundai i20, had been spotted at several shopping centres in uMhlanga, Durban North and La Lucia where cases had occurred.

“Over the past few weeks, the Marshall Security Special Operations Team, together with Durban North SAPS, noticed a significant spike in theft-out-of-motor-vehicle incidents at shopping centres, including an incident in La Lucia earlier this week,” said Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell.

“Then on Wednesday our members spotted a black Hyundai i20 matching the description of the vehicle used in the La Lucia incident. Once the suspects spotted our officers they fled at high speed, drove recklessly through traffic, and skipped a red traffic light before eventually stopping on Adelaide Tambo Drive, where three suspects were apprehended.”

Powell added the number plates fitted to the suspects’ vehicle were false, with the original plates found hidden beneath the driver’s seat.

“It was later confirmed that the recovered laptop bag, laptop, and several other items belonged to a victim whose vehicle had been broken into at a well-known centre in Windermere earlier that same afternoon. Additional exhibits found in the vehicle were also linked to the La Lucia incident from earlier in the week. The suspects are believed to be connected to multiple similar incidents across the Durban North, uMhlanga, and Gateway areas,” he said.
