Our Lady of Fatima learners give back to baby home

At a fundraiser earlier this year the school raised R8 200 for the Domino Foundation Babies’ Home in Durban North.

LAST month the Domino Foundation officially reopened its Babies’ Home after a three-month closure for extensive repairs and renovation.

While various roleplayers helped raise funds to help the home, local school Our Lady of Fatima also helped in those efforts with their ‘Let’s Raise The Roof’ campaign earlier this year.

The school hosted their Beats & Blankets music event in March with all funds raised going towards the Domino Foundation’s building project for the Baby Home’s roof.

Our Lady of Fatima band captains, Krisha Reddy and Havaria Pillay, attended the recent Roof Wetting celebration and spoke about the school’s efforts in helping out.

“We first learnt about the Baby Home’s need for a new roof through our music teacher, who had met Mrs (Karen) Brokensha, the chief growth officer at the Domino Foundation. Once she shared their fundraiser with us, we immediately felt drawn to support it. Our idea for Beats and Blankets had been developing since last year, and we wanted to use our school’s musical talents to make a difference,” Krisha explained.

“Coming from Our Lady of Fatima, a school known for its close-knit and compassionate community, we were not surprised by the overwhelming support we received. Whether attending the event or simply buying a ticket to contribute, everyone played a part. Altogether, we raised about R8 200 for the cause,” she said.

Havaria also touched on why giving back was important.

“In a world that is constantly changing, it is reassuring to know that we have one another. Giving back to the community fosters kindness, unity, and a sense of shared responsibility. No matter the size of the gesture, we were taught that every act of service can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life, and we were happy to be part of this worthy cause,” she said.
