Cyclists enjoy traffic-free ride on M4
Thousands of cyclists enjoyed a safe, non-timed, traffic-free ride along the Ruth First Highway with locals and holidaymakers joining in.
MORE than 1 600 cyclists took to the M4 Ruth First Highway over the weekend for the second mass participation event, the Cycle Sunday initiative.
The event was first held in October and saw cyclists of all ages and skill levels enjoy a safe, traffic-free ride on the M4.
The second event held on Sunday, December 14, was presented by Cycle Lab and Peschl Sports, owned by local resident Shaun Peschl.

“This edition of Cycle Sunday truly captured the spirit of Durban in December,” explained uMhlanga resident and organiser behind the event, Shaun Peschl. “The strong turnout and diverse mix of riders show just how much appetite there is for safe, accessible cycling spaces. Seeing families and visitors enjoying the city together was incredibly rewarding.”
The event was supported by the Pedal Power Association (PPA), which continues to champion safer cycling nationwide.
“Cycle Sunday shows what’s possible when roads are reimagined as shared spaces,” said PPA CEO Neil Robinson. “It’s a meaningful step toward strengthening a culture of safe cycling in Durban.”
Cycle Sunday was hosted in partnership with the eThekwini Transport Authority and Go!Durban.
The next Cycle Sunday is scheduled for Sunday, February 8, 2026.
