Durban North’s generosity brings hope to learners
Dozens of learners in Amaoti received new school uniforms through an initiative aimed at uplifting youth in the informal settlement.
LOVE, commitment and generosity came together this week as dozens of learners from Amaoti received new school uniforms through the work of Lungisani-Indlela (LI), a registered NPO dedicated to uplifting youth in the area.

Amaoti, one of Durban’s largest informal settlements, faces high unemployment and a range of social challenges. Since its formation, Lungisani-Indlela has focused on transforming and empowering young lives, with a strong emphasis on education.
“The initiative was about showing the children that they are seen, valued and supported. When a child knows someone believes in them, it changes how they see themselves and their future,” said Faye Curtis of Lungisani-Indlela.
One of the organisation’s flagship initiatives is its Learner Support Programme, through which sponsors contribute R250 a month towards a learner’s needs. The programme also employs Community Youth Workers who work on poverty-related challenges and conduct regular home and school visits.
In recent years, LI has expanded the programme to include additional academic support, responding to persistently high levels of illiteracy among children in the community.
Towards the end of 2025, 90 learners enrolled in the programme were still without school uniforms. Members of Harvest Church responded by each sponsoring a learner, committing to pray for them throughout the year and writing personal messages of encouragement.
The handwritten letters were distributed along with the new uniforms on Saturday, turning the day into a celebration filled with smiles and gratitude.
Curtis said the gesture sent a message to the learners to give their best, knowing they are deeply loved and supported.
