Nora dives in for animal welfare at Midmar Mile

Nora Buchanan is a member of the SPCA Swimming Squad and is raising funds for the association and the animals in their care.

FOR the past decade, uMhlanga resident Nora Buchanan has volunteered and worked at the Durban & Coast SPCA, giving back to an association that means so much to her.

It is for this reason, and admittedly, following a little persuasion from SPCA marketing manager Tanya Fleischer, that Buchanan will dedicate her aQuellé Midmar Mile to them.

She is one of four SPCA Swimming Squad members raising funds for the SPCA and the animals in their care.

Her page, which was set up last week, has already raised R650 with a goal of reaching R5000.

“I did my first last year with my cousins and I loved the experience. I had told some of the staff that I was doing it this year and the idea germinated about raising funds for the SPCA. I hadn’t thought about the charitable angle but I’m glad it was suggested. I work at the SPCA two days a week and I’ve been a volunteer for 10 years. My love for animals really inspired me to go the extra mile and raise as much as I can ahead of the swim,” she said.

Buchanan said she would love to surpass her target and encouraged those who could, to support not just her but the other SPCA squad members too.

She also spoke to her support for the SPCA, which she said was inspired by her parents.

“Growing up my parents always supported the SPCA. That stuck with me as I love animals and believe they deserve to be safe, cared for and protected. The SPCA works tirelessly to rescue animals in need, give them veterinary care and help them find a second chance at a happy life. By taking on this swim, I’m hoping to raise funds to support this incredible work,” she said.

Buchanan, who is a more of a runner, said she has been preparing almost daily by swimming several laps in the morning at her local gym.
