Committee meet on Moses Mabhida Stadium progress

Community Services Committee requested monthly progress reports on the work being carried out, including projected completion timeframes.

THE Community Services Committee held its first meeting of the year last week where it considered and approved recommendations on various service delivery projects.

Key among them was a progress report on the ongoing refurbishment of the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

In a statement last year, the municipality said it anticipated the remedial work to continue until 2027, however at the meeting there was no indication when the project might be completed.

The Committee requested monthly progress reports on the work being carried out, including projected completion timeframes.

The 15-year-old facility, which was built ahead of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, has been upgraded and rehabilitated in a project which began in 2024.

During the meeting, the long-term maintenance projects being carried out were discussed and detailed.

Key work required

• Arch refurbishment: Remediation and corrosion protection are required on the arch surfaces, beams and rails. The SkyCar rails are lifted, cleaned, assessed for corrosion, and coated to prevent future deterioration.

• Columns and cladding: Various levels of deterioration were observed on the stadium bowl columns. Refurbishment of the columns and cladding has been executed throughout the stadium bowl.

• Expansion joints: Structural joints have deteriorated and require urgent remedial work to prevent slab failure. Visible issues include spalling concrete, exposed rebar, and inadequate slab support.

• Roof structure: The membrane roof is suspended from cables spanning between the arch and the compression ring. The cables, clamps and light gantries are severely corroded and require remediation and additional protection.

• Waterproofing: Waterproofing is being undertaken in various podium areas to reduce leaks affecting retail and office spaces below. The project focuses on waterproofing level 3 podium joints and addressing stormwater issues associated with the membrane roof system.
