Fatima triumph at SPAR regional hockey tourney

Our Lady of Fatima beat the defending champions in the regional tournament of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge.

OUR Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School secured their seventh Durban North Regional title at the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge on Sunday.

They beat defending champions Ashton International College 2-0 in the final at Crawford International La Lucia.

Ashton put up a valiant fight, however Fatima were outstanding with Stella Fourie and Rachel Da Sousa netting the two goals.

In the build-up to the final, Ashton beat Reddam House Umhlanga while Fatima met long-time rival, and previous regional winners, Danville Park Girls’ High.

Eighty-two goals were scored after 23 games in suffocating heat, with Fatima netting 21 goals in their pool games and seven in the medal games, while Ashton earned 17 in their pool games and another two in their silverware games.

Our Lady of Fatima is now the first of 10 teams to book their berth at the Grand Finals taking place in July.
