WATCH: Residents protest over water supply outage

Residents held up placards showing their displeasure and frustration with the situation as many face seven days without water.

ANGRY residents took to Umhlanga Rocks Drive on Thursday morning (April 16) calling for urgent action as some residents entered day seven without a drop of water.

Parts of Parkhill, Rosehill and Umgeni Park have been experiencing intermittent water supply, low pressure, and at times, no water for days on end.

On Thursday residents held up placards calling for accountability from the eThekwini Municipality, with many saying they were ‘gatvol’ of the situation.

Bellinda Hellerle, Umgeni Park resident and activist, handed a memorandum of demands to Ward 36 councillor Heinz de Boer, who will now take the memorandum to the City manager’s office.

“This is impacting on residents’ well-being and mental health. We’ve heard various stories told to our councillor but there is still no water in our taps. Enough is enough, we want our water back,” she said.

On Wednesday, the eThekwini Municipality said that preliminary assessments suggest the issue may be related to air vacuums within the system or possible blockages affecting normal water flow.

“We recognise the significant inconvenience and frustration caused by the prolonged outage and sincerely apologise to affected residents,” the City said in a statement.
“Teams have been on site since the issue was first reported and are actively investigating and troubleshooting across various sections of the pipeline network to determine the cause of the interruption.”
