For many South African families, the matric dance is a meaningful milestone — a chance to celebrate a learner’s journey before they step into a new chapter.

However, the occasion is becoming increasingly costly.

What was once a relatively simple event has evolved into a high-expense affair, with designer outfits, luxury transport, professional styling and photography now often seen as the norm. Social media has amplified expectations, leaving many families feeling pressured to spend beyond their means.

In the current cost-of-living climate, that pressure can quickly lead to financial strain.

According to Tina Manyanya, spokesperson for short-term lender Wonga, some households are spending more than R30 000 on matric dance preparations — often without having budgeted for it in advance.

“We understand how important this moment is for families,” she says. “But it shouldn’t come at the cost of financial stress afterwards. With a bit of planning, it’s possible to celebrate and stay in control of your finances.”

To help families find that balance, Manyanya shares practical tips for managing matric dance expenses responsibly:

Set a realistic budget
Start by agreeing on what you can comfortably afford. A clear budget helps manage expectations and provides both parent and learner with a practical framework for decision-making. It also creates an opportunity to build financial awareness and planning skills.

Think beyond one night
While the event itself is important, considering long-term value can make a difference. Choose items that can be worn again or styled differently for future occasions.

“A good purchase shouldn’t only work for one evening,” Manyanya explains. “If it can be used again, it becomes far more worthwhile.”

Consider renting
For outfits that are unlikely to be worn again, renting offers a cost-effective alternative. It allows learners to enjoy something special without the full purchase price, while also being a more sustainable option. Simplify transport
