26 arrested for drunk driving in uMhlanga, Durban North

Law enforcement crackdown targeting drunk drivers results in the arrest of more than 80 motorists across eThekwini.

THE long-weekend saw the arrest of more than 80 motorists for drunk driving in operations across eThekwini.

In operations in Durban North and uMhlanga on Friday night, 26 motorists were arrested as part of ongoing efforts to ensure a zero tolerance for drinking and driving.

Officers from the Durban Metro Police Service (DMPS), the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and Durban North SAPS were involved in the operation.

In a statement issued on its Facebook page, Metro Police explained that the joint operation forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety, reduce alcohol-related crashes, and ensure compliance with traffic laws.

In the last few months, there have been concerted efforts to stamp out drinking and driving in roads in and out of Durban North and uMhlanga with the KZN Department of Transport documenting some of the excuses given by those arrested.

Roadblock operations were also held on Old Main Road in Hillcrest and Umgeni Road in Durban.

The operations also come at a time with government looking to amend Section 65 of the National Road Traffic Act (NRTA) to scrap the legal alcohol consumption limit in the country.

In January this year  Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy said a law that allows drivers to “drink a certain amount and get behind the wheel of a car must be scrapped”.
