Durban North ECD practitioners receive vital financial training to help grow and sustain their early learning centres.

The participants, many of whom began by offering child-minding and daycare services in their communities, are part of a three-year partnership with the foundation focused on ensuring the long-term sustainability and profitability of their ECD centres.

Non-profit organisation
The workshop was facilitated by Taking Care of Business (TCB), a non-profit organisation that supports small business development to address poverty.

TCB provides training, resources and practical experience to aspiring entrepreneurs. The organisation was also a finalist in the 2026 CSI Legacy Awards for Best Social Enterprise.

Durban-based trainer Simphiwe Mtetwa led the session, which covered both personal and business financial management. Topics included attitudes towards money, budgeting, credit and interest, debt management, savings strategies and consumer rights.

Participant Nontobeko Jali said the workshop had a significant impact on her approach to finances and business growth.

Education co-ordinator Nicky Walton highlighted the value of training initiatives in the ECD sector, noting their role in helping small business owners develop sustainable preschools while maintaining quality early learning for children.

“In the ECD space, training provides small business owners with invaluable skills to develop their preschools into sustainable businesses, all the while providing a good early learning experience for young children,” she said.
