Police officer killed in Mount Edgecombe ambush laid to rest

Captain Louis Cornelius Nel, a police officer with crime intelligence, was shot and killed in an ambush in Mount Edgecombe on April 30.

FAMILY, friends and fellow SAPS officers paid their respects at the funeral of Captain Louis Cornelius Nel at the Durban Christian Centre Jesus Dome on Friday (May 8).

Nel and his colleague came under heavy fire in an ambush in Mount Edgecombe a little over a week ago.

The officers, both members of Crime Intelligence, were travelling in a State vehicle on Flanders Drive when they were shot at.

Nel was killed in the incident, while the second officer sustained a gunshot wound to the neck and was airlifted to hospital.

Also present at Nel’s funeral on Friday were the KZN Premier, Thami Ntuli and Provincial Commissioner of KZN, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

While Ntuli delivered a eulogy on behalf of the SAPS, Mkhwanazi, assured Nel’s family that his killers will be found.

“Having worn the badge myself and having gone through the rigorous training that makes you an elite member of the South African Police Service, I understand the anger that all Special Task Force members are feeling right now. What I can assure the family and friends of Captain Nel is that we will find his killers and, pretty soon, dead or alive,” Mkhwanazi said.
