Calligraphy Guild opens new chapter at Durban North venue

The Calligraphy Guild has relocated to new premises in Durban North and is inviting anyone interested to attend its next meeting.

The Calligraphy Guild, founded in 1976, is beginning a new chapter with a move to new premises in Durban North and is inviting anyone interested in Western calligraphy to attend its next meeting on Saturday, June 20.

The Guild will now meet at The Market, 185 Lothian Road, Parkhill, a venue formerly occupied by Spade Nursery and Birds Coffee Shop. The meeting will take place from 09:30 to 11:00 and will focus on the theme of Decorated Capitals.

The Guild welcomes calligraphers of all skill levels, from complete beginners to experienced practitioners. Participants are encouraged to bring any calligraphy materials they may have, although Guild members are happy to share resources and provide guidance to newcomers.

Among those helping to foster a love of the art form is longtime calligrapher and teacher Ingrid Lotter Smith, who has introduced hundreds of students to the craft over the years.

Lotter Smith’s passion for teaching unexpectedly led her into the field of handwriting rehabilitation when a friend approached her for help with her academically gifted son, whose handwriting had deteriorated into what she described as “illegible scribble” under exam pressure.

“He was losing marks simply because teachers couldn’t read what he wrote,” said Lotter Smith.

“We worked together using what was then a trial-and-error method based on my calligraphy background and it worked. That’s when I realised many other students must be facing the same struggle.”

The experience inspired her to help many more learners overcome handwriting difficulties, while continuing to promote the art and discipline of calligraphy.

The Guild meets on the third Saturday of every month and attracts participants from across the region, including Hillcrest and Richards Bay.

Attendance at the June meeting costs R50 per person, payable in cash. Refreshments and treats will be available from the on-site coffee shop at an additional cost.
