In all, nearly 24 000 registration stations across the country were opened this weekend, allowing eligible citizens to register to vote, verify their registration details and confirm that they are registered in the correct voting district.
In North Durban, Northglen News spoke to residents at different voting stations on their reasons for registering.
Lettie Gardiner, an uMgeni Park resident, said she saw a post online about the registration weekend.
“I hadn’t voted for several years and I decided to register because I’m fed-up with the problems we are facing. I stopped at Northwood School to confirm my details and register. The whole process was quick and the people assisting were so friendly,” she said.
Durban North residents Angela Mc Dowall and her husband Rob also made use of the registration weekend.

“We stopped to check where we were registered and where our venue for the voting station was. I’ve previously had problems with the venue not showing on the register. I had also tried to register on the app before physically coming in but it kept timing out. I’m glad we got it sorted and I encourage all eligible voters to check their registration details.”
Kenville resident Halalisani Hlongwane echoed those sentiments.
“It is very important to vote. I’ve already registered and I encourage everyone who has registered to exercise their right to vote come election day as they can choose who they want to lead them,” he said.
