Marshall Security said it received information at about 10:51 that a white Toyota Avanza was being sought by Sydenham SAPS in connection with the investigation. The vehicle’s details were immediately circulated to the company’s armed response officers.
At approximately 11:08, officers conducting proactive patrols located and intercepted the vehicle on Adelaide Tambo Drive in Durban North. Additional Marshall Security officers responded to assist before members of Sydenham SAPS arrived on the scene.
Following further investigation and a review of CCTV footage, it was confirmed that the suspect was wanted in connection with the ATM fraud case.
According to the investigation, the suspect allegedly targeted victims at ATMs by distracting them while they carried out transactions before stealing or swapping their bank cards. The stolen cards were then allegedly used to conduct fraudulent transactions.
The suspect and the vehicle were escorted to Sydenham SAPS for further investigation and processing.
Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell said the incident demonstrated the value of co-operation between private security and law enforcement.
“This arrest highlights the importance of proactive patrols, rapid information sharing and the effective use of CCTV in identifying suspects and supporting police investigations. We also urge the public to remain vigilant when using ATMs, as awareness remains one of the best defences against card-related fraud,” Powel said.
Marshall Security advised members of the public never to allow strangers to assist them at ATMs, to keep their bank cards in their possession at all times, shield their PIN while entering it, and immediately contact their bank if a card is retained or appears to have been swapped. The company also recommended using ATMs located inside shopping centres or bank branches where additional security measures are in place.
