According to Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell, an armed response officer was conducting proactive patrols along Stanhope Place near Chris Hani Road at about 16:24 when he noticed a man carrying several motor vehicle parts.

“Upon noticing the officer, the suspect immediately dropped the items and fled on foot. A description of the suspect was immediately circulated to responding armed response officers, who converged on the area,” said Powell.

He said officers launched a brief foot pursuit before cornering the suspect.

“As officers attempted to apprehend the individual, the suspect produced a knife and attempted to attack one of the responding armed response officers. The suspect was quickly subdued and taken into custody without further incident,” said Powell.

He added that when officers questioned the suspect about the motor vehicle parts, he was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding their origin or ownership.

Greenwood Park SAPS were called to the scene and the suspect was transported to the police station for further investigation and processing.
