Association to host Town Hall meeting on uMhlanga bingo hall
The ratepayers’ association say they need to ensure planning decisions are responsible and made in the best interests of the entire community.
THE Umhlanga Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association (URRA) is set to host a Town Hall Meeting regarding its appeal to a bingo hall on Lagoon Drive in uMhlanga.
In March this year the eThekwini Municipality confirmed that the property where the place of entertainment is located had been give the go-ahead.
The approval of the bingo hall, which will include up to 150 electronic bingo machines, was met with anger from the URRA who voiced their opposition, citing concerns over traffic congestion, crime and property values.
During the objection phase, the municipality said it had received ‘approximately 500 objections’ to the project.

Residents have pointed out that the approval of a gambling facility was ‘more likely’ to impact the poor and families across eThekwini.
“Our appeal has never been about opposing development for the sake of it,” said Terri MacLarty, the chairperson of URRA. “It is about ensuring that planning decisions are responsible, sustainable and made in the best interests of the entire community. Before adding further high-impact developments, we need confidence that existing pressures can be effectively managed.”
MacLarty encouraged all residents and business owners to attend the Town Hall Meeting on Monday, July 13 at St Michael’s church, Durban View Road, at 18:00.
“At the meeting the community will receive an update on the bingo hall appeal and discuss the broader challenges affecting uMhlanga Village,” she said.
