SEVERAL areas across Durban North have been left without water after a leak was reported on the Northern Aqueduct.

The Northern Aqueduct is a pipeline that carries water from the Durban Heights Treatment Works to areas in the north.

According to the eThekwini Municipality a major leak was discovered in the vicinity of the M25 Highway near Duffs Road in the Mount Moriah area, leading to the shutdown of the aqueduct.

Ward 36 councillor Heinz de Boer said following the leak that three areas, Umgeni Park, Parkhill and Redhill, were without water.

He added that reservoir levels at the Virginia Reservoir were also low as a result of the leak.

“Repairs have begun and teams are working on it. We don’t know the reason but they have shut down the northern aqueduct to effect repairs. We are in a crisis situation and I urge residents to use water sparingly during this time.

“With the Virginia Resevoir compromised, it may only pick up during times when low water volumes are used. As we have seen before, even when full, it takes a day for water to reach all areas due to the vast area Virginia serves,” he said.

In a statement the City said repairs are expected to be completed by midnight tonight (July 22).

“It is anticipated that repairs will be completed by midnight on 22 July after which the process of refilling all affected reservoirs will begin. Restoration of water supply will vary across the system depending on reservoir recovery and consumer demand,” the City said.

The City added residents supplied by reservoirs fed from the uMngeni-uThukela Water Durban Heights Water Treatment Works (WTW) through the Northern Aqueduct will experience water supply interruptions during this shutdown.
