Upfliting Greenwood Park youth through sport
The development initiative uses soccer as a platform to empower young people, promote healthy lifestyles and create positive opportunities.
GREENWOOD Park’s Glide Soccer Development is calling on local businesses, parents and community members to invest in grassroots sport as the NGO works to expand opportunities for young footballers through a series of fundraising initiatives and development programmes.
Founded by Julian Kowlessar, Glide Soccer Development uses soccer as a platform to empower young people, promote healthy lifestyles and create positive opportunities for children from diverse communities.
Kowlessar said the organisation’s upcoming fundraising tournament was born out of a desire to provide greater opportunities for young players while securing resources needed to sustain and grow its programmes.

“The fundraising tournament was inspired by our passion to create more opportunities for young players to grow both on and off the field. We believe soccer is not just a game but a tool that brings young people together, teaches discipline, builds confidence, and creates positive pathways for the future.
“This tournament is also aimed at raising much-needed funds to help improve resources, equipment, training opportunities, and future development programmes for our players. We also hope the event strengthens community unity, encourages healthy lifestyles, and gives young athletes a platform to showcase their talent in a safe and positive environment,” he said.
Funding remains one of the club’s biggest obstacles, affecting everything from equipment purchases and tournament hosting to transportation and access to quality facilities.
“Sponsorship opportunities for grassroots sports are often limited, despite the important role these programmes play in community development. However, we remain committed to creating opportunities for young players and continue working hard to build partnerships that can help sustain and grow the club.”

The organisation also works to address some of the social pressures affecting young people today, including peer pressure, substance abuse, crime, and a lack of positive recreational opportunities.
