EDITOR – On 3 August at 9.15 pm, I watched in horror as a tiny flame turned into a raging inferno. Within seconds, the informal settlement in North Coast Road was ablaze.
My heart goes out to those poor souls that have lost everything, but what of the legal homes that border the settlement? The home owners that had to have plans passed, must pay rates and services, must live in constant fear.
Surely now is the time to control how many shacks are rebuilt on this site and build single units to make fire-fighters access easier. We watched fire engines struggling to reach the flames.
