Local rugby fans have a massive weekend ahead of them. This past Saturday, Vryheid Rugby Club hosted the Bears in a crucial Northern Natal Rugby Sub Union semi-final clash, ultimately overpowering the visitors 48-10 to book their first home final in years.

Strong finish after steady start

The game began at a ‘loose’, frenetic tempo as the Bears looked to unsettle the home side by playing quick ball. Vryheid initially struggled to find their rhythm, looking as though they were stuck in first gear for much of the opening 40 minutes.

However, even while not operating at full throttle, Vryheid’s baseline quality shone through. Their defence held firm and they capitalised on their scoring opportunities to cruise into the half-time break with a commanding 21-0 lead.

Second-half dominance seals victory

In the second half, the home side settled into the match and began playing a much more structured, clinical brand of rugby. The Bears fought hard and managed to put 10 points on the board, but Vryheid’s momentum was undeniable. The scoreboard kept ticking over, culminating in a comprehensive 48-10 victory at the final whistle.

Standout performances recognised

Individual brilliance was also on display, with the coaching staff recognising two standout performances. Chris Viviers was named ‘Man of the Match’ for the forwards after a bruising battle with the opponents, while Carl Holtzhausen took home ‘Man of the Match’ honours for the backline, having consistently sparked the team’s attack.
