Local mountain bike riders claim first place podium finishes

Fifty meters from the finish line it was an all-out sprint between the six riders, with Willem Richter claiming first position in the men's category

The Dunlop Siegetown Wheelers Gravel Grind took place on September 7 and was an absolute triumph.
Perfect weather and impeccable organisation by chairperson, Corne Stevens, made for an unforgettable experience. The route was any gravel racer’s dream – setting the scene for a fast-paced race.
105 eager riders lined up at the start for a 50km and 80km distance.
Willem Richter, Everette and Sandra Haywood, three of our own Vryheid mountain bikers, participated in the 80km. It was a fast start with a group of six riders breaking away early in the race to maintain their lead throughout.
Fifty meters from the finish line it was an all-out sprint between the six riders, with Willem Richter claiming first position in the men’s category, and Sandra Haywood first position in the women’s category. Everette Haywood came in a split-second after the winning time, claiming fourth place in the men’s section.
The impressive prizes, sponsored by Dunlop and Cycle City, were a hit with winners in each category and many lucky draws putting smiles on riders’ faces.
If you missed out, mark your calendars for next year’s event – see you then!
