December is here, which means that the festivities and parties are lining up. But remember that you can stay fit and work off those extra calories every Saturday morning at 07:00 with fellow runners and walkers. Yes, parkrun will be carrying on throughout the festive season.
Vryheid parkrun welcomed three new participants over the weekend: Malusi, Mieke and Marietjie. Six new personal best times were also set, clocked by Colin, Prudence, Bianca, Susanna, Thabani and Manfred. Congratulations!
Did you know?
Parkrun is a five-kilometre event for runners, walkers and volunteers that takes place every Saturday morning at more than 2000 locations in 22 countries across five continents.
Parkrun was founded by Paul Sinton-Hewitt on October 2, 2004, at Bushy Park in London, England. The event was originally called the Bushy Park Time Trial. It grew into a network of similar events called the UK Time Trials, before adopting the name ‘parkrun’ in 2008 and expanding into other countries. The first event outside the United Kingdom was launched in Zimbabwe in 2007, followed by Denmark in 2009, South Africa and Australia in 2011, and the United States in 2012. By October 2018, over five million runners were registered worldwide; now over 10 million.
Events take place at a range of general locations including parks, stately homes, forests, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, beaches, promenades, prisons and nature reserves. Participants can travel to and complete any parkrun, anywhere.
