The R6,5-million, high-tech Earl Substation was formally powered up on Wednesday afternoon.
Rodney Goosen, acting director of the Electrical Department, said the substation had been revamped to feed power to the nearby neighbourhood, Arbor Park, Siyahlala-la and the area dubbed Aquarand.
This new suburb is bordered by Hastie Street, Allen Street and Hilldrop.
Upgrades to the existing substation at the intersection of Hastie and Earl streets, are said to tie into a three-year plan to increase electrical supply to the aforementioned areas.
“This is fancy and sophisticated equipment,” enthused Mr Goosen.
Refurbishments at the Earl Substation include an increase in electrical panels from five to 12, a new switching building, a remote switching room, a battery room and a new switch gear.
In layman’s terms, the upgrades will increase power supply while reducing danger to employees.
Deputy mayor, Rachel Mdluli stated the growth in employment and business resulting from the new mall and hotel had increased demand for electricity, and highlighted the need for a ring feed in the area.
The commission of the Earl Substation was hailed as the first milestone in this regard.
“This will be followed by the commissioning of the Mall Substation and the refurbishment of the Arbor Park South Switching station.”
After cutting a ceremonial ribbon and unveiling a commemorative plaque, Cllr Mdluli was given a tour of the new substation, which features a direct current (DC) charge, to assist with early morning power supply.
With the final breaker installed, Cllr Mdluli pushed the button and the supply was connected.
“We have used the side building for remote switching, to provide safety in the event of an explosion.”
Mr Goosen thanked all employees, stakeholders and contractors for their part in the substation refurbishment, which cost R4-million in the last financial year, and R2-million in this.
