Lord Shiva is the God of preservation. His right hand holds a trident which represents the three qualities of purity, passion and inertia.
The drum in his left hand represents ‘Om’, from which all sounds take their origin.
The crescent moon on his head indicates that he has perfect mind control.
The serpent around his neck stands for eternity and also for the individual soul that rests upon Lord Shiva.
