A ‘grave’ sight has been shocking locals at the Glenridge Cemetery in Glencoe – with vandalised graves, litter and tall grass this is truly a sore sight.
A cemetery is a final resting place for departed souls, but sadly the cemetery in Glencoe is no resting place, according to concerned members of the community.
The graveyard is not only lacking in maintenance but plumbing too, as the taps have been removed and their basins used as dustbins.
This is a problem for Hindu visitors, as it is customary for them to wash their hands after leaving the graveyard. With the lack of working taps this becomes impossible.
Furthermore, there is no caretaker in sight. When asked the reason behind the poor maintenance and absence of caretakers, Patrick Ndlovu, Assistant Waste Manager at Endumeni Municipality, stated:
“The vandalism rate is very high, and as a result caretakers are scared off by the constant attacks.”
However, the municipality has come up with a solution to this dilemma. They plan to fence off the area in an attempt to keep vandals and intruders out.
Mr Ndlovu also stated that caretakers will soon be hired to eradicate the ‘grave’ sight that meets locals’ eyes.
