There will be no power cuts today in Endumeni.
Mark Donaldson of the Technical Services’ Electrical Department confirmed Eskom had made the announcement at around 10pm last night that the power emergency had been ‘lifted for now’.
The power was due to go off at 8am today in Dundee as the parastatal had announced a stage 3 emergency meaning that load shedding would occur three times a day seven days a week.
Stage 2 equates to three times a day every day except Sunday. A stage one emergency which most thought had been implemented had on the schedule Dundee and Glencoe being blacked out for two-and-a-half hours every second day in the late afternoons and early evenings.
Eskom has blamed the cuts on maintenance to turbines compounded by wet coal. Should the turbines be switched off completely it would take seven days for these to become fully operational – hence the decision to introduce load shedding to prevent a total black out.
While the emergency made by over for now, Mr Donaldson warned that Eskom had said that load shedding could be implemented if the situation deteriorated.
