From ‘tree school’ to classrooms

The Vezubuhle Daycare Centre was officially opened by Kevern Mattison, General Manager of Forbes Coal (Pty) Ltd

Zinoju Coal (Pty) Ltd has embarked on a project to build a daycare centre in the Magdalena area. The building of the school commenced in October 2013.
Hand-in-hand with the Department of Environmental Health and Social Development, Zinoju provided funding for the infrastructure of the school, accommodating about 60 children from the surrounding areas, who were previously being schooled under a tree.
The building consists of two classrooms, an office with a sick bay, kitchen and bathrooms, all furnished and decorated by a team under the watchful eye of Ms A Raghoonan. A wooden jungle gym has been provided, and the school premises will see a beautiful green playground as the days go by. The project also includes a farming project, where earthworm farming (mulching) will be taught to the children as a development in the ways to farm. There will also be a 50-tree fruit orchard.
The funding to run the school is the responsibility of the Department of Social Development and Environmental Health.
Toys and games were generously donated to the school by the construction company, To Good Construction, responsible for building the daycare centre.
The Vezubuhle Daycare Centre was officially opened by Kevern Mattison, General Manager of Forbes Coal (Pty) Ltd, on February 28.
“The children were very excited about their new school, and eagerly went and played on the jungle gym as the community members and parents enjoyed some refreshments,” said Mr Mattison.
