Skies to buzz with radio-controlled aircraft

These 'toys' cost hundreds of thousands of Rands

The skies above Dundee are to buzz with the sounds of high-tech radio-controlled jets, with one model valued at over R100 000.
Anthony Tack of the Dundee RC Flyers said an exciting weekend has been planned at the airfield, from around 10am this Saturday to midday on Sunday, with a demonstration by two visiting radio-controlled craft enthusiasts from Durban.
Eric Bell of Hobbytech Model Shop will be flying his Euro Fighter (with Saudi Airforce colours). This impressive ‘toy’ has a 16kg turbine and flies on A1 jet fuel. It reaches a maximum speed of 320km per hour, and has a length and wing span of over two metres. The price tag is a whopping R100 000. Eric will also have with him a Sukhoi 26 1/3 scale, with a 85cc petrol engine, and an extra 260 with a 50cc petrol engine.
Friend Pierre Joubert will fly his 1/7 scale f 15 jet with a 14 kg turbine, and a Sukhoi 29 with a 50cc engine.
“The sound of these jets is awesome, and they fly just like the real thing,” enthused Anthony.
Anyone wanting to see the two pilots in action or to know what this hobby is all about is invited to come to the Dundee aerodrome from 10:00am on Saturday. On Sunday there will be more flying until around noon. Bring the family, as there will be lots to see!
