La Route du Prince Impérial, Louis Napoléon was launched on June 1, 1996, by the then Chairperson of the Battlefields’ Route Association, Ray Heron, and Jenny Bustin, President of the French Teachers’ Association of KwaZulu-Natal.
The Uqweqwe community, from the area next to the Prince Imperial monument, has benefited substantially from this cultural tourism research development project since April 1995.

Nineteen years later, the local highlight of the annual French Week in KZN (which started in Pietermaritzburg last weekend) is the Soirée Française, to be held on Saturday night at Chez Nous – the home of our own French lady, Mme Elisabeth Durham.

Her Excellency, the Ambassador of France Mme Elisabeth Barbier, will grace the event, while Glenn Flanagan, the project leader from Pietermaritzburg and a champion in promoting Dundee, will present visual highlights of the cultural research development project.
On Sunday, June 1 the focus turns to QweQwe – the scene of the death of the Prince Imperial during the Anglo Zulu War 135 years ago.
A 10-kilometre fun run is being held, ending at the monument. For details e-mail kefu.manqele@transnet.net, or phone 083 571 6638.

There will also be a visit to Jojosinin Primary School for an inspection of the rain tanks donated by the project.
An Nguni cow will be donated by the French Ambassador, after which Nosipho Moloi, top student at the local school, will receive an award.
Laying of wreathe to the Prince Imperial will be done by Ambassador Barbier, while local nkosis will lay wreathes in honour of Troopers Abel and Rogers, who were also killed in the skirmish. For details contact Mme Durham on 034 212 1014.
