Taxi fare increase, rumours of strike

A tariff increase will, however, be in effect in July. The increase will vary, depending on routes and distance. "Commuters must brace themselves for an increase of not more than 10% from July 1," commented Mr Hlatshwayo

Taxi users in Ladysmith and surrounding areas can expect another fare increase as of July 1, 2014 (tomorrow), according to the Klipriver Taxi Association.

The Ladysmith Gazette has heard that a strike is possibly in the offing, with taxi bosses recently holding meetings. Giving credence to these rumours is the fact that, in the last couple of weeks, a SANTACO (South African National Taxi Association) strike was held in the Durban area. A Gazette journalist spoke to Klipriver Taxi Association member Mr Hlatshwayo, who denied all allegations of an upcoming strike.

A tariff increase will, however, be in effect in July. The increase will vary, depending on routes and distance. “Commuters must brace themselves for an increase of not more than 10% from July 1,” commented Mr Hlatshwayo.
One of the main reasons for the tariff increase is evidently because the association has endured a series of petrol price hikes since the beginning of the year.
On a positive note, though, exciting news for commuters around the country is that taxi ranks and taxis around South Africa will soon be receiving access to free WIFI connection.
