How to make your own home-made fire extinguisher

Make a cost effective fire extinguisher with items found at home.

A fire extinguisher is usually a very useful but expensive goodie to have around the house, but not anymore. Make your own fire extinguisher at a cost of just under R10.

Ingredients; One plastic bottle (the size can vary according to preference), water, dishwashing liquid, bicarbonate of soda, toilet paper and white vinegar.

Method;

Cut a hole (big enough to fit a straw in the lid of the bottle)

Fill the bottle with one third of vinegar and one third of water.

Add a drop of dishwashing liquid for foam.

Take the piece of toilet paper and lay it on a flat surface.

Neatly pour bicarbonate of soda on the toilet paper.

Wrap the bicarbonate of soda tightly, and fasten it till it has a neck.

Pull the tissue through the hole in the lid, so that half is within the bottle and half is sticking out.

Secure the tissue with  tape around the lid, and store away until needed.

In times of emergency drop the toilet paper in the bottle, shake vigorously and pour over the fire.

The home-made fire extinguisher can be very effective, depending on the size of the bottle, as Disaster Manager, Lucky Mthambo demonstrates below:
