If you are cold how does he feel?

A veranda is his home this winter

Everyone has described this past week as the coldest in the Dundee area for some years.  The mercury has plummeted to minus four degrees with a thick white frost covering the brown grass every morning.

A minus 6 was measured in the Glencoe area.  So while you think you are freezing to death while huddling over your heater and drinking hot chocolate spare a thought for Thulisiwe Reginald Mazibuko, fondly known as Blondie, who beds down every night on the veranda of the Methodist Church on Gladstone Street .

Covered only by a thin blanket, the 35-year-old is philosophical.  “Yes it is cold at night but it is fairly safe as it is a church,” he told the Courier.

Covered only by a thin blanket, Blondie survives the freezing nights and is up early to sweep the pavement outside the Book Exchange in the hope of earning a few cents for a cup of tea.

Originally from the Uitval area, Blondie says he has been in Dundee for about a year, guarding cars as there is no work in his area.

“It would be nice to get a room to live in.  But once winter is over I will be warmer,” he said.    If you want to assist Blondie and others who are in need support the Round Table’s Winter Knights campaign.
