R103 a ‘no go’ zone for motorists
Rocks and burning tyres are still in the road, making it impossible for motorists to get to Colenso or Estcourt
It’s been five days in a row that the R103 has been closed due to a violent protest in the Roosboom area.
The protest began in earnest early on Monday morning, when residents began barricading the R103 with rocks and burning tyres to ensure that Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality took them seriously. This after the municipality failed to meet their demands following a peaceful march to the Town Hall last Saturday. The community say they have run out of patience after waiting more than 10 years for water in the area.
Police have made a number of arrests since the riot began. Running battles between police and protesters have characterised the riot, with rubber bullets and tear gas having to be used to disperse the angry crowd. However, police withdrew from the area every evening, and the protesters merely returned and set up their barricades again.
Rocks and burning tyres are still in the road, making it impossible for motorists to get to Colenso or Estcourt. It is said that more meetings will be held today (Thursday) to find a solution to this escalating problem.
Police say they cannot guarantee motorists’ safety and urge those travelling in the area to be on the lookout for trouble.
