Oprah is renowned for her talk show which featured many different celebrities, as well as discussing relevant topics. Oprah’s link to South Africa is her Leadership Academy for Girls which was opened in 2007. This is an initiative for disadvantaged girls of academic excellence to thrive on their potential and become future leaders of the world.
Charlize Theron
Born in South Africa and raised in Benoni, Charlize suffered ongoing verbal abuse from an alcoholic father. She moved to America and has a successful career in acting, becoming the first South African to win an Oscar award. She is involved in various charity organisations, including the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, as well as women’s rights advocation.
Beyoncé
An American singer and songwriter, Beyoncé’s music is her claim to fame. She has supported causes such as natural disasters in America (such as Hurricane Katrina). She has collaborated with other female celebrities in support of female empowerment. Beyoncé has been involved in advocating job creation as part of her goodwill causes.
JK Rowling
Author of the bestselling Harry Potter series, Joanne is heavily involved in several charities and also established the Volant Charitable Trust which aims to alleviate poverty and promote social equality. This fund also supports children, single parent families and research for multiple sclerosis. She also assists in a reading club which teaches prisoners how to read.
Hilary Clinton
A former First Lady and Secretary of State, Hilary is also a member of the Clinton Foundation which provides support for various sectors (such as economic development) and social issues (including race and religion).
